Biographical information / Informations biographiques

After graduating from Mount St. Vincent and Dalhousie University, Margaret worked for several years as a teacher at Oxford Street School. In 1942 she joined the Public Service Commission of Canada, where she first worked for the Meteorological Service, then for Family Allowances, and finally for the Commission itself where she served for many years, retiring in 1978 as Assistant Regional Director here in Halifax. Among her responsibilities with the PSC was a significant administrative role in St. John's in connection with Newfoundland's entry into Confederation in 1949. In 1967 she was presented with the Centennial Medal for diligence in service to Canada. In 1977, she was honored with a special retirement award for long and meritorious service with the PSC, the award being presented by the Lieutenant Governor in a ceremony at Government House. Margaret was active in volunteer work over many years, including service to disabled patients at the Veterans Memorial Hospital, and work with the Alzheimer's Society.2

    CUMMINGS, Barbara Brigid -
    74, Halifax, died in the VG Site, QEII, on December 1, 1998, after a lengthy illness. Born in Halifax, she was a daughter of the late Frederick and Elizabeth (Martin) Cummings. She received her early education at Mount St. Vincent University and had a lifelong interest in music. She studied voice and piano in the Halifax Conservatory of Music and later music education at Dalhousie University. Before her retirement, she held several positions in Montreal and Halifax, including positions with CNR, Workmen's Compensation Board of Nova Scotia and several federal government departments. She was active in various parish activities at St. Mary's Basilica including St. Vincent de Paul Society. She is survived by sisters, Margaret Legere, Joan Cummings, both of Halifax; Ruth Sinnema and husband Luc, Calgary; brother, Donald, Halifax. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today in Cruikshank's Halifax Funeral Home, 2032 Robie St. Funeral mass will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday in St. Mary's Basilica. Burial in Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Lower Sackville. Donations to The Lung Association, St. Vincent de Paul Society or charity of one's choice.
