DEVONPORT, Charles Edward -
83, Cole Harbour, died May 17, 1995, in Dartmouth General Hospital. Born in Wales, he was a son of the late Ellen (Nellie) Devonport Walsh. He was a veteran of the Second World War 1940-1945, and a dairy farmer in Cumberland County. He worked for many years at the Halifax County Rehabiltion Center, Halifax County School Board and Canada Post. He appeared in the Golden Globe award winning documentary Lost Children of the Empire and a book of the same name. He was a well-respected member of the community and a lifetime elder of the United Church, Cole Harbour. Surviving are his wife, the former Joan Coomber; sons, Charles E. (Chuck), Porters Lake; Fred G., Sackville; Robert M., Alberta; daughters, Glenice (Mickey) (Mrs. Chip Chippett), Whitehorse, N.W.T.; Susan (Mrs. Alex Legere), Cow Bay; Jennifer (Mrs. Allan Gilbert), Lawrencetown; Christine, Linda, Cole Harbour; Deborah, Sault St. Marie, Ont.; Nancy Johnston, Lawrencetown; Ruth (Mrs. Wade Rent), Three Fathom Habour; Lisa (Mrs. Kim Johnston), Lake Echo; 27 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sons, Gerald, Harold (Sonny), Phillip, Thomas; two grandchildren; great-grandchild. Visitation 2-4, 7-9 p.m. today, cremation to take place with a memorial service 2 p.m. Friday, both in Atlantic Funeral Home, 767 Main St., Dartmouth, Rev. Arthur Snow officiating.
