    DOWNEY, Peter Joseph -
    89, 49 Beacon St., Amherst, formerly of River Hebert, died July 11, 1997, in Highland View Regional Hospital, Amherst. Born June 15, 1908, in St. Andrews, N.B., he was a son of the late Peter Sr. and Marguerite (Gauthier) Downey. He worked as a coal miner and carpenter for many years before retiring in 1968. He served in the Second World War in the Medical Corps and Army Services division. He was an avid artist, painting in oil and acrylic for more than 70 years. Surviving are daughters, Genevieve (Gen)(Mrs. Doug Currie), Amherst; Carolyn (Mrs. Wayne Dalrymple), Lower Sackville; Anne, Halifax; sons, Victor (Vicky), River Hebert; Walter (Wally), London, Ont.; sister, Marie Donnelle, Shediac, N.B.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his wife, the former Alvena LeBlanc; brothers, Archie, Philias, Albert; sisters, Margarite Legere, Edith Babineau, Angeline Melanson, Felina Gothreau, Dauphine Porelle, Estella and Genevieve Donnelle, Louise Price. Cremation has taken place. Visitation 7-9 p.m. Sunday, parish prayers 8 p.m. Sunday, both in Campbell's Funeral Home, Amherst. Funeral 11 a.m. Monday in St. Paul the Apostle Church, River Hebert, Rev. Joe Christensen officiating. Burial to follow in Ragged Reef Cemetery, Joggins. Donations to the Above and Beyond Campaign of Highland View Regional Hospital.
